The Web Foundation at Web Summit 2017

Web Foundation · November 6, 2017

Our team is excited to be in Lisbon this week for the Web Summit 2017. We’ll join technologists, diplomats, business leaders, journalists and bloggers from 170+ countries for one of the biggest tech events of the year.

As well as showcasing new technologies and promising companies, the Summit is a platform to discuss how digital technologies, from cryptocurrencies to social media platforms, are impacting society. We’ll be flying the flag for affordability and inclusion, making sure that the benefits of technology are enjoyed by the many, not the few. We’ll also be engaging on crucial digital rights issues like free speech and censorship.

If you’re going to be at the Summit, reach out to our team and say hi! Our CEO, Adrian Lovett (@adrianlovett), Senior Digital Rights Advisor, Renata Avila (@avilarenata), and Policy Director Craig Fagan (@craigmfagan), will all be there. And be sure to join our team at the below events.

Join our sessions

Nov 7, 15.05 –Moderating hate speech: Who deserves a platform
Renata Avila will join a panel to discuss the politics of hate speech. Do we have the right to say whatever we want online? Or do social media platforms have an obligation to monitor hateful comments?

Nov 8, 13:00 – The cost of freedom of information online
Craig Fagan will discuss how we can maximise freedom of information online while still ensuring personal safety in a panel moderated by the Guardian’s Owen Jones.

Nov 9, 14:10 – Investing in people: skills, infrastructure, opportunities
Our CEO Adrian Lovett will speak about the Web Foundation’s commitment to digital equality, including bridging the digital gender gap, increasing digital literacy, and expanding affordable access to the internet.
