It is with great sadness that we reflect on the passing of Michael Gurstein, a dedicated advocate for advancing civil society through democratising access to the tools of information and communication technology (ICTs). Michael was a key player in the areas of open government data and internet governance, most recently as a commentator, speaker and essayist.
Through working with Michael on a number of Web Foundation initiatives, we remember his fervent opinions and useful critical eye. We also look back fondly on his commitment as one of the first Open Data in Developing Countries (ODDC) mentors. He was deeply valued by his mentees and by the network as a whole. He was also a strong believer in our mission to make the web open for everyone.
Our condolences and thoughts are with Michael’s family and loved ones at this time.
