Women’s rights activists in Egypt, and their vital work in fighting for women’s rights and freedoms, are under threat. Recent actions by the Egyptian government to freeze assets and arrest activists and campaigners working to advance women’s rights are an example of the chilling political measures being taken to harass, intimidate, and silence women. Amnesty International notes that recent arrests of women’s rights defenders “is a clear sign that Egyptian authorities are intensifying the crackdown on human rights activists”.
We stand in solidarity with activists and women’s rights defenders in Egypt, and call on the Egyptian government to embrace and support their vitally important role in fighting for gender equality and women’s human rights.
