Join us this weekend to celebrate the Web We Want!

Web Foundation · September 24, 2014

The first weekend of the Web We Want Festival is nearly here! In collaboration with London’s Southbank Centre, we’ve transformed your brilliant ideas, questions, concerns and reflections on the Web YOU Want into a weekend of exciting events and discussions centred around the Web. This weekend (September 27-28) we’ll kick off this new three-part Festival, designed in partnership with the Web We Want global campaign to celebrate 25 years of the Web and look ahead at how best to create and protect the free and open Web We Want.

We’ll begin on the morning of Saturday, September 27, when Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, and Jude Kelly, Artistic Director of Southbank Centre, will officially open the Festival with a discussion about the need for a global “Magna Carta for the Internet”, and how the weekend’s workshops will shape the creation of this key document. Later that day, join us at one of a number of seminars dedicated to the building of the global Magna Carta for the Internet and have your say in shaping the future of freedom and human rights online.

The full weekend will feature a wide array of talks, seminars and workshops about the Web — debate issues surrounding privacy, surveillance and security online, explore art and artistic expression on the Web, learn how to build a website, or spend your days exploring the Web We Want market, where you can play with new technologies and software, sign up to campaigns, and contribute to the next stages of the Festival. And don’t forget to snag a ticket for Saturday night to join what is certain to be a fascinating conversation between Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Richard Susskind OBE — IT Adviser to the Lord Chief Justice, President of the Society of Computers and Law, and Chair of the Advisory Board at the Oxford Internet Institute.

Can’t wait until Saturday to get started? Check out full programmes for Saturday and Sunday, read through some of the amazing material contributed to the Festival by today’s online thought leaders, or check out the exhibit of Illuminated Tweets by Tom Phillips  on at Southbank Centre’s Poetry Library — on through October 26!

Even if you can’t join us in London this weekend, you can still participate in the Festival! Tune in to the event livestream on both Saturday and Sunday to connect with participants in London and contribute to building the Web We Want.

And whether you’re in London at the Festival or tuning in online, be sure to add your voice to the online conversation at @webwewantfest or by using the hashtag #WebWeWantFest.
