Voice interfaces to the Web are being explored and tested in rural areas in the Sahel. The Web-alliance for Regreening in Africa team, working in the European Union-funded VOICES project, traveled through remote areas in Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana and talked to farmers in the field to know how they exchange knowledge with one another (see Aman’s reflections in a previous post). Their knowledge is of great value for other farmers who want to learn about the regreening of degraded lands in the Sahel.

The Web of speech is an innovative new channel for communication, especially in this part of the world where people don’t have internet connections, but do have mobile phones.
