Mr. Sam Pitroda is an internationally respected telecom entrepreneur, development thinker, and policy maker.
Mr. Pitroda served as Advisor to Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and as the founder and first Chairman of India’s Telecom Commission. He successfully championed access to technology as the key to social change, laying the foundation for India’s telecommunications and technology revolution of the 1980s.
As head of India’s National Knowledge Commission (2005-2009), Mr. Pitroda helped bring India’s knowledge institutions into the 21st century. Recently, he served as Advisor to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovation, with the rank of a Cabinet Minister. He chaired the Smart Grid Task Force, as well as committees to reform public broadcasting, modernize railways, and deliver e-governance. He is also a founding Commissioner of the UN Broadband Commission and Chairman of the ITU’s m-Powering Development Board.
Mr. Pitroda holds over 15 honorary PhD’s and close to 100 worldwide patents.
